New T-Shirt Proclaims "God Created You"

The T-shirt is an icon of pop culture that can also be an effective witnessing tool. A Christian dad has designed a bold new T-shirt with a powerful message intended to make people think.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) December 9, 2004 – Christian apparel has made its way into the mainstream clothing industry, as indicated by the number of companies selling fun fashions for the faithful. In many cases, however, the Christian message becomes lost in the process.

Christian symbols and sayings can be rather ambiguous on today’s trendy T-shirts because they are often hidden within a decorative pattern or in a colorful screen-printed illustration. This makes the Christian T-shirts difficult to distinguish from other mass-market T-shirts.

A Phoenix father has set out to change that with his own T-shirt design. Richard Olsen and his family can be seen around town wearing bright gold or light blue T-shirts emblazoned with black letters boldly declaring “God Created You.” The main purpose of this shirt is to grab people’s attention and confront them with a thought-provoking message.

Compared to traditional Christian slogans such as “He Chose the Nails” or “What Would Jesus Do,” the words “God Created You” have a broader spiritual significance that is appealing to both Christians and Jews, as well as to others. Nevertheless, bridging the gap between different religions was not Olsen’s intent.

“The Bible offers two important themes,” Olsen explains. “God created everything, and Jesus died for our sins. The fact that Jesus died for us has already been promoted well in the popular culture, culminating in Mel Gibson’s The Passion movie. So I decided to focus on the Creation.”

Rather than sporting a generic statement, Olsen purposely made his T-shirts speak directly to each individual, saying “God Created YOU.” When considering the meaning behind it, the idea that the Creator of the whole universe personally made every one of us is even more powerful than the comforting “Jesus Loves You.”

The effectiveness of this in-your-face approach is evident in the attention Olsen receives while wearing his T-shirt. Strangers in crowded shopping malls have stopped to shake his hand. People in passing cars have pointed to his shirt and given him a “thumbs up” sign. Even on the beach in Southern California, he received an overwhelmingly positive response. Comments range from simple smiles and matter-of-fact remarks such as “I like your shirt” to exclamations of “Great message!” and “God created you too!”

As for negative reactions, which Olsen says have been few and far between, nothing diminishes his enthusiasm. "It’s my personal mission to spread this message," Olsen said. "I hope these T's make people think."

Rich Olsen works full-time as a chemist/quality engineer. He and his wife, Teri, a published author and church librarian, have three sons whom they homeschool. The original prototype “God Created You” T-shirts were made by hand at their kitchen table using a screen printing kit the family received last Christmas. Once the Olsens realized how popular this message was, they started having the T-shirts professionally manufactured.

These shirts, available in youth and adult sizes, are light blue and daisy yellow in color. They are made in the USA of high quality pre-shrunk 100% heavyweight cotton. The cost per each is $14.95. They can be ordered at his wife’s website, Click on the “Product Catalog” button. [Or scroll down to the bottom of this page to order via a PayPal link.]

Olsen is currently evaluating distribution proposals in an effort to make his T-shirts more readily available nationwide. Since these T-shirts are an excellent witnessing tool, they are ideal for church groups and events. Olsen invites inquiries regarding discounts on large quantities for organizations, fundraising, or for resale. Olsen donates 10% of his profit to Christian ministries.
