    Peace

In Colossians 3:15 we read: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." Peace means much more than the absence of war. Peace is a state of mind in which we are calmly impervious to whatever is going on around us. Feeling at peace does not necessarily mean being in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or conflict. True peace means that we can be in the midst of turmoil and still retain a sense of serenity. It is an inner contentment when no matter what the external circumstances are, our soul is in harmony with God and we know that He is in control.

I usually feel most at peace when surrounded by God's Creation: standing outside at night looking up at the stars; watching butterflies flutter among garden blossoms; listening to birds chirping in the trees or the rhythmic sound of ocean waves; hiking through the mountains, desert, or woods. All of these things tend to relax the mind and let me simply breathe in the joy of the moment, the reality of being alive.

Nevertheless, you can't always depend on the environment to bring you restfulness or peace. The world is ever-changing, people are unpredictable, and calamities happen. Every day parents say, "IF only the kids would stop fighting and do what they're supposed to be doing...THEN there would be peace in this house!" For me, trying to find peace while homeschooling three strong-willed boys is a constant battle. Nevertheless, in the middle of a hectic day, taking time out for a quiet moment with God in the comfort of your own home can be like a breath of fresh air.

Philippians 4:6-7 states: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Christ is "the Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6), and it is His mission to restore to earth and heaven the peace that sin has broken. "Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1)

Jesus offers to give us peace if we follow Him. He says, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28-29) If we lean on Him, He will give us the strength and endurance to weather any storm - unlike "the troubled sea, when it cannot rest," where "there is no peace." (Isaiah 57:20-21)

There is a slogan that says, "No Jesus, No Peace" followed by the words, "Know Jesus, Know Peace." That's a clever, Biblically accurate way of stating the only way to find permanent peace is putting your trust in the One who transcends all of our trials and struggles: Jesus Christ. Those outside of Him may be restless, troubled, anxious, fretful, and full of fear. But know Him well, and you will know peace in your heart, in your life, and forever in heaven.

Thus, no matter what is going on in your life, by trusting in God with total confidence and security, "Thou wilt keep in perfect peace." (Isaiah 26:3). "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you...Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27) "For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace." (I Corinthians 14:33)
