Homeschooling: A Ministry of Raising Godly Children
By Kelly Maynard I recently was traveling with a friend to a homeschool leadership meeting; we were discussing homeschooling and some of the hardships we all experience. During our conversation my friend shared how recently she had had a particularly "hard day" of homeschooling. On this particular day she had the opportunity to pray about the "hard day" with her pastor's wife, who is also a homeschooling mom. My friend said she had the most awesome prayer time and that at the end they both walked out of the room with tears in their eyes, totally encouraged of the Lord. I was thinking, how wonderful it is to have a friend to share with, and pray with, about our homeschooling struggles. My friend agreed with me, but said, that that was not the most awesome part of her story. It was what they prayed that was so powerful. While the two of them were praying the Lord showed them something that I will never forget. They had both prayed before for God's anointing upon them to teach children's church, ladies bible studies, etc., but they had never thought of asking God to anoint their homeschooling efforts. They decided to ask God to anoint them to teach their own children. My friend said after praying for God's anointing, they went on to have the best week of homeschooling ever. Wow! I will never forget that story. So many times I have struggled in doing things in my own strength. But I can't do things in my own strength; I need to totally rely upon God, for He is strong in my weakness. Yet, I find myself slipping occasionally and I end up going back to doing things "my way". Not a good thing! My husband, Steve, and I, have a ministry in which we minister to married couples once a week in our home. We are currently nearing the end of our first 13-week session of teaching couples how to be one-flesh and have a victorious marriage. My husband and I would never have entered into this ministry without knowing God has called us to it, and that he has anointed us to reach the couples in our community and anointed us to break enemy strongholds in their lives. Without God's anointing we know our efforts are in vain, as we don't have the ability within ourselves to do the things I mentioned above. Why is it when it comes to ministry we would not attempt it without God's anointing, but yet the one ministry we know God has called us to, raising godly children (homeschooling), we don't even think of asking for His anointing. My friend's story has changed my life. It has changed how I look at our homeschooling. It has changed how I do things. I don't have to worry or fret that my children will learn. I can rest in the Lord, as I know God has anointed me to teach my children; it is His anointing that breaks through the problem areas. What a relief! I know, as I am faithful to do what He tells me to do, that He will do the rest. Praise the Lord!
