Home’s Cool Kids

Home’s Cool Kids is a series of refreshing new picture books for 4 to 8-year-olds, all of which feature homeschool kids as the main characters. Homeschooled children will be glad to finally have a set of books about kids like them. Homeschool parents will appreciate the stories for their accurate, down-to-earth portrayal of homeschool families.

Nevertheless, the fact that the main characters are homeschoolers shouldn’t limit their mainstream appeal. (After all, homeschoolers read books that take place in a public school setting all the time!) The Home’s Cool Kids characters encounter real-life situations that all children can relate to. In the process, non-homeschool readers will hopefully come to understand homeschooling a little more.

Since these books are written by a Christian homeschool dad, the stories have a moral to them. Biblical references are included, usually in a thoughtful but non-preachy author's note at the end. Anyway, books about homeschoolers are so rare that the Home’s Cool Kids titles are must-haves regardless of your religious beliefs.

Scott Stroud and his wife, Mary, have four young children that they homeschool. One day, Mary commented to her husband about the lack of children’s books in which homeschoolers are the main characters, and this inspired Scott to create his own!

Scott Stroud owns a barber shop and does his writing on the side. Scott’s first book is entitled Baby Kong, followed by Grumpy Mr. Grady. Both of these are fun read-aloud stories for families. My 7-year-old son especially likes them, so he and I have read these books over and over again. My 12-year-old son also likes reading them to himself and to his younger brother.

The front cover illustration on Baby Kong looks a lot like my house! (see photo below) Seriously, many parents with young children at home will be able to identify with Baby Kong – so I imagine that it will be quite a popular book! My youngest son gets a kick out of adding the menacing “mwa-ha-ha” laughter to accompany the story of the boy who rampages through the house destroying everything in his path and not letting his mother get any schooling done. Sound familiar?

Grumpy Mr. Grady is a heartwarming story that focuses on a grumpy neighbor and his dog. This book amuses while it teaches a valuable lesson in honor of our veterans, as well as setting a good example of the proper way to show respect for our elders. Grumpy Mr. Grady would be a great story for grandparents to read to their grandkids, as in the end it presents a wonderful opportunity for them to talk about “the old days.”

You can buy the Home’s Cool Kids books individually or as a set. These are high-quality, full-color hardcover books, each with 24 thick glossy pages – so they're sturdy enough to stand up to the Baby Kong at your house (see mine below)! Jim Hunt’s colorful cartoonlike illustrations perfectly complement the clever text. Take a peek inside each book at www.HomesCoolKids.com. Hopefully, more of these homeschool-themed books for children will be coming soon!
