Important Note: The legal status of holidays varies from state to state and according to the federal government. For example, most government employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. So when a holiday falls on the weekend, it is usually observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). Traditionally, some holidays are fixed; e.g., Christmas is always December 25. Other holidays are set by a day of the week and month; e.g., Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. The most complicated of calendar holidays is Easter Sunday - it is a "movable feast" that can occur anytime from March 22nd to April 25th, the date of which is calculated according to special tables based on the full moon and the spring equinox. Public holidays are also known as U.S., American, Federal, or National holidays.
